About me

I started writing while teaching, just as the first PC’s came on the market, and eventually had enough courage to give up the day job – hundreds of ‘magazine’ short stories, serials and travel-related and general interest features published, and also a novel (‘Tiger Country’) and a book for beginner writers, ‘How to Turn Your Holidays into Popular Fiction’). I’ve got 2 more pet novel projects on the go, but there’s no real interest out there. Both are ‘popular’ rather than literary. I believe many readers (especially a large swathe of the huge women’s market) are not being catered for by mainstream publishers who seem to think what is needed is more sex and violence. My fiction niche is ‘romance with an edge of exotic adventure’ involving ordinary people in challenging circumstances, in believable relationships rather than unrealistic ones. Call me old-fashioned. I probably am.

It's so difficult 'writing' readers into what is really an almost lost world like this one. Must look again at possible early confusions, and motivation issues for Clare. Thanks again for your trouble, and glad you got into it, Kate (more) and won+3

I found your writing style engaging and the characters and their flaws and concerns realistic. However, I was left curious as to why Clare decided to return to Africa when she did and whether her feelings for Richard or her experiences in Africa were important to her gradual loss of faith. I also found, given my limited knowledge and experience of (post)colonial and ex-pat Africa, that some of the references and implications at the start of the book were a bit in-group and went over my head, although was less of a problem as I got further into the book and more familiar with the background. On a similar note, I found Clare's memories in the early stages of the book a bit confusing as I hadn't yet gotten the nuances of the different relationships yet. Never the less, I found myself increasingly caught up in the story and the characters and found the roles and relationships of the priests and the power figures to the local community fascinating. Clare's return to St Gab's and the differences between the real, hoped for, and unforeseen legacy and ramifications of colonialism were well developed on many levels and have left me wanting to learn more about the relevant fields. Thanks for making this book available, Izzie (more) and earned+3
