    Herbert would be impressed!

Hi Jim, I really enjoyed reading this novel. It took me back to my days of reading James Herbert (The Secret of Crickley Hall is one that springs out after reading yours). I thought the plot of a love traingle within a ghostly setting worked really well and i loved some of your descriptions, especially when Adam gets a busted nose from a ghostly Jasmine in the middle of "you know what". I especially liked the fact that the three ghostly souls find peace in the end despite their adultress past. A nice engaging read!

  • A Year of Living Musically

    A real musical journey!

I wouldn't usually read this kind of book Katherine but in yours I found a really interesting story. Most of this would come from the fact that I myself am musical but more so that my own son went through many years of musical training and touring with the Suffolk Youth Wind Band playing saxophone. Many of the descriptions in your story take me back to this period and I found that I recognised great similarities in the politics and structure of your choir to that of the wind band he was part of, music is after all similar in all its guises. I liked your humorous take on many of the things my own son used to comment on in respect of co-existing with other musicians. I also can appreciate the stresses of musical exams and the preparation involved as my youngest daughter is currently involved in piano grade 3 studies (she has plenty of time!, she is only 12). If I would have any concern it would merely be that for anyone who isn't or hasn't been around music in its true sense the sto...I wouldn't usually read this kind of book Katherine but in yours I found a really interesting story. If I would have any concern it would merely be that for anyone who isn't or hasn't been around music in its true sense the story may cause some mental meltdown (it's confusing as it is for musicians!). However, all that said your story is a truly personal and engaging read. I really enjoyed it. (more)

I don't usually read short story collections as a rule but I found this particular set to be fresh and engaging. I really enjoyed ‘The Secret of the Perfect Vegetarian Risotto for One’ like another reader on the site. I'm actually vegetarian and thought "Hmmm" this will be interesting and then really didn't expect the ending although I had the feeling something was brewing up. I'll buy a copy of this book to add to my home library in order to be able to say I really have something in there that's "completely different". Well done CN for giving reading a different twist!
