Not a random question at all. I will, first and foremost, point you in the direction of this website:
It's genius. You can search for magazines based onn genre, how much they pay, what type of circulation they have, what type of submissions they accept ... tons of possibilities. The number of magazines that they have registered on the site gets bigger every week. It's now the first place I go to whenever I'm looking to send soemthing out.
Sadly, that wonderful website didn't exist when I started sending stuff out ... so I started much smaller. I went local -- submitted things to local newspapers, local contests, etc. And then, when I had a few things under my belt, started submitting to more well-known magazines. I think it's always good to have a portfolio of sorts with which to approach larger organizations -- though if you have something that you really think could work, don't by any means let the above stop you from submtiting to a larger name straight off! :)
I also, once upon a time, babysat for a writer, who let me write her column sometimes as a way of payment. Not sure if that route's available (or, for that matter, enticing) to you though ... :) (more)
