About me

Where to begin? I have always enjoyed writing, ever since I was a child and can’t remember a time where I haven’t wanted a book in my hand. I did a degree in English and Drama at Roehampton University and ended up doing a PGCE at the Cambridge University, Homerton College after which I embarked on a career in teaching. I’ve been doing this ever since. I read excessively, all sorts of novels by different authors; my favorites are Ian Rankin, Ruth Rendell and Daphne du Maurier but I’m always finding others. That said, writing is a passion for me and I really enjoy the creative release it can give. “Mystery, Deceit and a School Inspector” was published in 2006 with UK Independent publisher Pneuma Springs (you can read the first few chapters for nothing here on CN). I now also write to appeal to the darker side of the teenage/young adult mind. My second work titled OTOLI for Young Adult readers went through redraft here on CN with the help of readers feedback. This book was published by Pneuma Springs on 28th April 2011. I’m now researching and writing for other projects for both Adult and Young Adult readerships. I look forward to touching base with you all.

I guess these days the only thing mainstream publishers have over the indies is the fact that they have much larger marketing budgets (or their own marketing teams). However that doesn't look to be everything now given the way publishing is changing. It's nice to have a publisher with a personal touch and to be listened to. That's not to say they are push overs, if they feel something won't work they say so. They are continuing to grow so that's a good sign when others have folded. I'm just pleased to see other people's hard work being picked up for publication too from places like CN. I'll keep you all posted in repect of OTOLI. Best regards Bryony (more) and gained+3

I agree, I have no experience of mainstream publishers, but the fact that I've been able to converse with someone that seems to genuinely care about my opinion really makes a difference. As far as promotion, the publishers are covering any costs, but I don't know what their precise plans are in terms of promotion. I'm just going to do my bit on Facebook and Twitter etc. But as I said in my post, my main concern is just holding my debut novel in my hand for the first time. I can't wait! Glad to hear your latest book is coming along, and good luck with it when it's all sorted. I'll let you know about sample chapters as soon as they're available. Thanks again, Ardie (more) and earned+3

I'm also going through the same process again for OTOLI with my current publisher. I'm at the waiting for type-set proof stage as well as the re-work of cover art, but it is still all very exciting. As much as we all long to land a killer deal with a mainstream house the Independent publishers tend to give you more of a one on one treatment which can make the process so much more enjoyable, you tend to have an input rather than just saying oh okay then. Will you be getting much support in terms of book promotion? Enjoy the ride and I'll look out for your preview chapters! Bryony (more) and received+3

My publisher is offering 25% of the RRP. For details check this link for the Book Savvy news letter and scroll down a very short way until you see the book entry. Can't be bad can it ;-) Here's the link, http://bit.ly/eUjUVL (more) and received+3

I'll look forward to Anna's post. It certainly makes the site's main principles stand out much more. One thing regarding the readers' cafe area. Could you maybe add something to make it also a bit clearer that readers can read excerpts of published books from publishers in addition to those self publishing through CN. My publisher has been more than happy for me to share much more in terms of taster chapters than some would (the very big mainstream ones spring to mind here). Once they have published the novel version of OTOLI it is my intention to do the same thing as we have for Mystery, Deceit and a School Inspector. Are you aware of other publishers doing the same on CN? It would be interesting to know. There's nothing wrong in giving readers something for nothing if it can help them totally make up their minds about whether to purchase a title. Best Regards Bryony. (more) and won+3
