    So far so good

I've only read the first two stories so far but very impressed. The Tower will send shivers down the spine of any small press publsihers, while Warp Speed features drugs, drink, a big space ship and a mysterious alien - oh, and a cute girl that works in a convenience store. Well worth checking these out.

An intriguing collection, full of unexpected bits and bobs...

Seduced by the description of the book, I dove eagerly into this anthology, interested to see what kind of stories it might contain. The following are my mini-reviews of each piece... The Tower - I liked the idea behind the story, but it was very reminiscent of some _Twilight Zone_ episodes that I've seen previously, and so that irked me a little bit (on the other hand, most material in the sci-fi/horror/fantasy genres tend to be re-treads or reinterpretations, so this wasn't an official black mark for me). My biggest concern about the story was that it felt like it was almost a bit too rushed - events happen very quickly and it feels like it's hard to really connect with any of the characters. The dialogue is also a bit stilted in parts and it doesn't feel like the characters are naturally speaking (I attributed this to the quick pacing). I did like the story, but felt like it was a bit superficial and not as layered as it could have been... I did like the story, but felt like it was a bit superficial and not as layered as it could have been... Warp Speed - I really really liked this story and it reminded me a bit of Neil Gaiman's 'How to Talk to Girls at Parties'. The characters were utterly believable and I was very anxious to know what would happen to Mike! One technical note - near the end of the story, once Emma has left, the name Mike is used, when it should be Dave (it occurs when Dave insults Emma). Tibbert - Interesting twists throughout this one, though the end encounter with the uncle seemed a teensy bit abrupt to me - then again, who knows for sure how things should function in the dreamscape? I did like the idea of using dreams to figure out what's happening in life though - very Jungian! Pigeon Morning - _Loved_ this one, especially with its hilarious descriptions of the businessmen/pigeons. I think most people on the morning/evening commutes are only about two pokes-in-the-back away from homicide on a daily basis... Shift - Nice twist on the ending, though I must admit, I thought that the main character would end up being the meal for all the wealthy, glamorous people! Me, Marc & It - This story reminded me of the stories you tell around the campfire late at night (at least every American kid has heard some version of this, though perhaps without the sex, lol). Because of this, I thought it was a bit predictable, especially since the driver didn't seem too scared by the figure they keep seeing - I think it would be a bit more scary if we sympathized more with Marc's character (as it is, he's kind of a brat, and you almost cheer the 'monster' getting him in the end)... Looking for Narnia - GREAT story...seriously...I would give it a 5 if I could :) When the Devil Moved Next Door - Turned out very differently from what I had anticipated, but I liked it all the more for that - I especially liked the Devil's 'transformation' Give It a Name - Again, very different from what I had anticipated, but I thought it was a very touching, sad and beautiful story... All in all, I enjoyed the collection and would be very interested to see what else the author might have to offer... (more)

it's great how stories so short can make you feel so uneasy. each of these you could easily finish on a short journey - but you'll want to push on through to the next and the next, until you're done. The metafictitious nightmare The Tower is a great opener, and it really sets the tone for the rest of the book. Without wanting to give the stories away too much (there are a number of well-executed twists throughout), I'll say there's aliens, dreamworlds, the living dead and even the devil. However, for me the real stand out story was Looking For Narnia. This read quite differently from the others, and I found it extremely moving, especially the epiphany that closed it off. Powerful and entirely believable.

Vivid and imaginative, especially the first story. The plot is fresh, original but still written with simplicity, The publisher's character, breasts, rejection, agents and boxer shorts is a highly hilarious mix that turns downright scary. A real electrifying read, anytime.

I wrote this, so can't really review it - although I think it's fabulous, obviously! I decided to self publish back in April 2006, not because I thought I'd never place it, but because I wanted to experience the process from beginning to end - writing it, editing it, getting it subbed, commissioning a cover design, readings, radio interview, press interviews etc etc. I made loads of mistakes and would change loads if I did it again, but it was a great leaning experience. You can buy your own copy from Amazon if you fancy it - target reader is 9-12 year-olds, but I know plenty of adults who have enjoyed it. If you enjoy fantasy tales featuring magic, witches and a nice dollop of gothic, give it a go!

This tale provides its reading audience with a wonderful trek into the realms of Lightsleep and its colorful, fantastic denizens... Damon is a horror, a menace and a nuisance (awful enough to make Roald Dahl sit up and take notice!)...his life changes one day, when he ends up falling down the proverbial rabbit hole into another world, a world populated by witches, talking animals, horrific clowns and other assorted characters. Damon is made to undertake a sort of hero's quest, to stop the evil plot of the Pink Witch who intends to use the power of unimaginable evil to take over Lightsleep... I enjoyed the plot of the story tremendously and I think Batham did an excellent job in creating a sort of alternative fairy tale landscape (I especially liked the fantasy-based references made throughout). This story is also nicely poised to either be a stand-alone novel, or the initial offering in a larger series. My major criticism of the novel would be that the characterization of Damon feels a bit thin. He doesn't have to be an all-around likable character, but his evolution throughout the novel seems a bit rushed/forced in some parts and drags a bit in others. As a result, it's difficult to entirely sympathize with Damon, as you spend part of the book wanting to give him a smack upside the head (at least that was my reaction at times, lol). As he is the main character, his transition is an important one to witness and it was my reaction to his growth/progress that induced me to label the book with three rather than four stars... However... Despite my annoyance at some aspects of Damon, I think that there are quite a few moments where the book really shines - the scenes with Ariadne and the underground circus especially hint at the potential this story possesses. Enjoyable romp, and I would definitely be interested in a sequel... (more)

I read this book years ago and could not wait to read it to my daughter. Unfortunately I had to wait until she was nine before I felt safe that she would not suffer from constant nightmares! She loved it and even though it is 18 months since we read it together she still remembers all the characters and what happened to them. We intend to buy copies for all her schoolfriends for Christmas (as well as Clare Chambers' 'Burning Secrets'). WE NEED A SEQUEL NOW!
