I loved this book. Very difficult to put down. A satirical take on the difference between types of people, in particular politicians and scientists. A "Yes Prime Minister"-type view into the ways of politicians - apposite reading in these days of dissatisfaction with MPs & politics.

    Enjoyable but not overwhelmingly fantastic...

I sometimes think the best books aren’t those that seem to be deliberately seeking the grand prizes and worldwide acclaim (and every reader has come across those books from time to time). While it’s all well and good for a reader to keep their mind open, you sometimes just get a craving for something that is just a simple, good read – believable, interesting plot, decent characters, and a writer who will keep their readers engaged and caring about how it will all turn out in the end. This is definitely one of those books… This novel focuses upon a fisheries scientist, Dr Alfred Jones, who is a respectable, slightly dull and unassuming man, who is commissioned to head up a project to introduce salmon (and eventually fly fishing) into the Yemen. I found the book enjoyable and (sad to say) fairly realistic in its depiction of what might happen if such a project was in fact put forward. I found the book enjoyable and (sad to say) fairly realistic in its depiction of what might happen if such a project was in fact put forward. Torday has some fun with the bureaucrats of his novel but it is the main characters that he (and by extension we) care most about and it is in these depictions that Torday truly shines. Without giving too much away, there are a couple of plot holes that I thought were unnecessary to the book as a whole, and I feel that Torday isn’t quite as invested in his female characters (then again, maybe I just couldn’t fully sympathise with them)… But it is the relationship between Sheikh Muhammad ibn Zaidi bani Tihama (the sponsor of the project) and Dr Jones that is the true centrepiece of the novel - it is directly responsible for the evolution of Dr Jones’s character. It is this transformation that I was most interested in and I feel the book might have been better served if this took greater precedence... Still, the book overall was fairly good and I will definitely be interested to read what else Torday has to offer… (more)
