Pick up a Penguin
Every year there seem to be more Penguin book covers turned into products. Mugs, deckchairs, notebooks, waterbottles… The list goes on. Here are three of our favourites.
1. Passport Cover, from Amazon.co.uk
With the best will in the world, it’s easy to lose your passport in your bag. So we reckon this distinctive orange and white Penguin cover will stand out amongst the paperbacks and travel sweets – and when trying to locate your departure gate what better passport cover to have than DH Lawrence’s The Lost Girl?
2. Tote Bag from DecorByEdna on EtsySummer requires you to lug around water bottles, sun tan lotion, swimming costumes, towels, picnic lunches… Carry all your gear in this ‘Sherlock’ bag. It’s elementary!
3."On the Road’ Thermos from Amazon.co.uk
Celebrate the Great British Summer with a book and thermos of tea (in your car looking at a rain lashed beach). After all, Jack Kerouac was quite the one for drinking – although he might have preferred a stronger kind of brew.
Dress for Literary Success
Show the world your love of books with these bookish fashion items.
4. Harry Potter Dress available on Etsy from Rooby Lane
This dress is one of the more unusual literary fashion items we’ve found – a dress made from fabric printed with text from a Harry Potter book.
It will provide a talking point at parties – and if you get bored, at last you’ll have easily-accessible reading matter. Rooby Lane is away on holiday at the moment, but we’ll be sure to check back to see her amazing creations!
5. Pride and Prejudice scarf, available from Booklovergifts.com
You could wrap this scarf over your head to shield your delicate skin from the sun – but it will also keep you warm when sitting outside on a summer evening. Printed with text from Pride and Prejudice, it’s as though you’ve got Mr Darcy draped around your neck.
6.War of the Worlds Handbag available from The Literary Gift Company
You’ve read the book. You’ve seen the film. You’ve listened to the concept album. Now get a HG Wells’ War of the Worlds Reader’s Digest book transformed into a handbag. It’s a no-brainer.
Eau de Bibliotheque
There are a surprising array of fragrances and scented candles inspired by the smell of books, libraries, paper and ink. Who knew there were so many book-sniffers!
7. ‘Paperback’ Perfume’ available from The Literary Gift Company
This perfume apparently has ‘a tantalising hint of aged paper with violet undertones’. Ideal to get those literary types sniffing around you with interest at a book launch party.
8. Byredo M/Mink Eau de Parfum available from Liberty
Inspired by the smell of a solid block of ink purchased in Asia, could a sniff of this cure writer’s block?
Eat Me, Drink Me
There are plenty of book related products to enliven your summer parties – but here are a few of the more unusual ones we’ve found.
9. Boxes of Matches, available from Etsy
Light your barbecue with these Catch (fire) 22 matches. Other book titles are available, including To Kill a Mockingbird (and cook it on the barbie).
10. Virginia Woolf Book Covers Cleaning cloth, available from Etsy
At last, there’s a Virgina Woolf themed Microfibre Lens Cleaning Cloth. Clean your glasses, to better re-read Mrs Dalloway or wipe down your DVD of The Hours. You will wonder how you ever lived without it.
11. Alice In Wonderland Hip Flask available from Etsy
If the party is running dry, you could take a sneaky nip from this hip flask. After all, it does say ‘Drink Me’.
12. CompletelyNovel Mini Book Flags
Make your own book cover flags to adorn your cocktails, stake your claim to a sandwich, or to perk up your canape selection. We printed out some mini book covers, and stuck them to cocktail sticks, but you could also do the same for wooden drinks stirrers. Can you spot the flags for books by CompletelyNovel One Big Book Launch authors Tom Evans, Amanda Epe, and Daphne Kapsali?
Have a wonderful summer!
