10 New Writing Competitions to Enter This Autumn by Jessica Barrah

There’s still four months of the year left! If you haven’t achieved all of your writing goals as yet in 2019, entering a competition can be a great way to get inspired, write something new to a deadline, or polish up something you’ve previously worked on and abandoned.

1. HWA Unpublished Novel Award

Details: A competition for historical fiction – defined for this competition as stories set at least 35 years in the past. The theme and genre are both open. Novels should be between 40,000 and 100,000 words. Include a synopsis of 500 to 1,000 words, plus a 200-word biography.
Entry Fee: £20. All entrants will be offered a consultation with the MD of Sharp Books.
Deadline: 30th September 2019
Prizes:1st – £500 plus a publishing contract with Sharp Books. Runners-up (2) – £100.

2. Crowvus Christmas Ghost Story Competition

Details: A ghost story competition, with a word limit of 4,000. There are also two categories for children: ages 10 and under, and 11 to 16.
Entry Fee: £3 for one, £5 for two. Children – free entry
Deadline: 30th September 2019
Prizes: Adult category – the top three winners get a percentage of the entry fees as follows: 1st – 40%. 2nd – 20%. 3rd – 10%. Children’s (in each categoriy – a £50 one4all gift card. All shortlisted stories will be published in an anthology and their writers will receive a free copy.

3. Owl Canyon Press Hackathon Short Story Competition

Details: For this competition you need to complete a story whose first and twentieth paragraphs are given on the competition page. The overall length of your story must be 50 paragraphs, with each paragraph containing at least 40 words (this includes any paragraph with dialogue).
Entry Fee: None – free entry
Deadline: 30th September 2019
Prizes: $3,000, $2,000, $1,000. Winnerss and finalists will be published in an anthology. The three winners will be invited to give a public reading at Inkberry Books in Colarado.

4. Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Prize

Details: This is two competitions in one – the Tom Howard Prize and the Margaret Reid Prize. The Tom Howard prize is for poems in any style, while the Margaret Reid is for traditional verse as defined on the competition page. There is a line limit of 250 lines.
Entry Fee: $12
Deadline: 30th September 2019
Prizes: Tom Howard Prize (any style) – $2,000 + gift certificate. Margaret Reid Prize (traditional verse) – $2,000 + gift certificate. In addition there will be ten Honourable Mention awards of $100.

5. Eyelands Book Awards

Details: A competition for books – you can submit a published book or an unpublished book, but it must be all your own work. The categories include poetry, novel, novella, children’s books, memoir, graphic, historical and short story collection.
Entry Fee: 27 euros
Deadline: 20th October 2019 (midnight PST)
Prizes: Grand Prize (Published Books) – A 5-day holiday in Athens plus a handmade ceramic and online publication of excerpts of your book. Grand Prize (Unpublished Books) – Translation into Greek and publication by Strange Days Books.

6.Troubadour International Poetry Competition

Details: Submit a poem of no more than 45 lines on one A4 or US-Letter size page.
Entry Fee: £5
Deadline: 21st October 2019
Prizes: £2,000, £1,000, £500.

7. Dinesh Allirajah Prize

Details: A contest from Comma Press and the University of Central Lancashire for stories of between 2,000 and 6,000 words on the theme of Artificial Intelligence. Submit a covering letter containing your name, address, email, contact number and story title as well as your entry. If shortlisted, you will be expected if possible to attend the prizegiving event in Leeds.
Entry Fee: Free to enter.
Deadline: 25th October 2019
Prizes: £500. Shortlisted entries will be featured in an ebook anthology.

8. Bedford Writing Competition

Details: A competition for stories of up to 3,000 words and poems running to no more than 40 lines.
Entry Fee: £6 each, £12 for three. Full-time students: £4 each, £8 for three. Net proceeds will be donated to charity.
Deadline: 31st October 2019
Prizes: (in each cetegory): £500, £150, £100. In addition there is the Bedford Short Story Prize of £100 for a local resident, and a young writers prize of £100 for entrants between 17 and 30.

9.The Caledonia Novel Award

Details: A competition open to unpublished and self-published debut novelists. Stories should be at least 50,000 words in any adult or young adult genre. Email the first 20 pages of your novel followed by a 200 word synopsis. If longlisted you will be expected to submit the full manuscript by 6th December 2019. The judge is Jenny Hewson from the Rogers, Coleridge & White Literary Agency.
Entry Fee: £25
Deadline: 1st November 2019
Prizes:1st – £1,500. There is in addition a special prize for the best entry from the British Isles and Ireland, a place on a writing course at Moniack Mhor Creative Writing Centre.

10. Bath Children’s Novel Award

Details: An annual international contest, open to unpublished and self-published debut novelists, is for novels of any length for children or young adults. Email the first 5,000 words of your story followed by a one page synopsis. The longlist is chosen by a panel of children and young adults. The shortlist judge is literary agent Lauren Gardner from Bell Lomax Moreton.
Entry Fee: £25.
Deadline: 17th November 2019
Prizes: 1st – £2,500. The writer of the most promising longlisted novel will receive an online place on Learn to Edit Your Novel the Professional Way from Cornerstones Literary Consultancy. Shortlisted entrants will receive introductions to literary agents and feedback.
