News room: 10 Black Quotations for Black Friday

10 Black Quotations for Black Friday by Jessica Barrah

Black Friday, a concept that was completely alien to the UK until a few years ago, is upon us – although there have been pre-Black Friday sales for at least the last week. After you’ve ordered a truck load of discounted electronic devices, why not go back to black? These ten quotations are all about the colour that is not a colour, but instead absorbs all the colours of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them…

1. “I wore black because I liked it. I still do, and wearing it still means something to me. It’s still my symbol of rebellion — against a stagnant status quo, against our hypocritical houses of God, against people whose minds are closed to others’ ideas.”
― Johnny Cash

2. “Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”
― Coco Chanel

3. “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black.”
― Henry Ford

4. “Black is not sad. Bright colors are what depresses me. They’re so… empty. Black is poetic. How do you imagine a poet? In a bright yellow jacket? Probably not.”
― Ann Demeulemeester

5. “Black literature is taught as sociology, as tolerance, not as a serious, rigorous art form.”
― Toni Morrison

6. “I’ve been 40 years discovering that the queen of all colors was black.”
― Pierre-Auguste Renoir

7. “Since stepping reluctantly into public life, I’ve been held up as the most powerful woman in the world and taken down as an “angry black woman.” I’ve wanted to ask my detractors which part of that phrase matters to them the most—is it “angry” or “black” or “woman”?”
― Michelle Obama, Becoming

8. “Looking up at that starry sky gave him the creeps: it was too big, too black. It was all too possible to imagine it turning blood-red, all too possible to imagine a Face forming in lines of fire.”
― Stephen King, It

9. “People won’t admit it, they’re too busy grabbing to see that the lights have fused. They can’t see the darkness and the spider-face beyond and the great web of it all. That there’s always this if you scratch at the surface of happiness and goodness.
The black and the black and the black.”
― John Fowles, The Collector

10. “Black is the most essential of all colors. Above all, if I may say so, it draws its excitement and vitality from deep and secret sources of health…One must admire black. Nothing can debauch it.”
― Odilon Redon
