10 Inspirational Quotations about Diary Writing by Jessica Barrah

Writing a diary can be a very therapeutic activity in times of anxiety – and we are certainly living through ‘interesting’ and unusual times. We’ve gathered some quotations together to inspire you to start your own diary – whether you’ve have thoughts of future publication, or whether strictly for your eyes only.

1. “What a comfort is this journal. I tell myself to myself and throw the burden on my book and feel relieved.”
—Anne Lister, I Know My Own Heart: The Diaries of Anne Lister, 1791-1840

2. “I am anxious, and it soothes me to express myself here. It is like whispering to one’s self and listening at the same time.” —Mina Murray in her journal in Dracula, by Bram Stoker

3. "Never forget that writing is as close as we get to keeping a hold on the thousand and one things — childhood, certainties, cities, doubts, dreams, instants, phrases, parents, loves — that go on slipping, like sand, through our fingers.”
—Salman Rushdie, Imaginary Homelands: Essays and Criticism 1981-1991

4. “In the journal I do not just express myself more openly than I could to any person; I create myself. The journal is a vehicle for my sense of selfhood. It represents me as emotionally and spiritually independent. Therefore (alas) it does not simply record my actual, daily life but rather — in many cases — offers an alternative to it.”
— Susan Sontag, Reborn: Journals and Notebooks, 1947-1963

5. “In the diary you find proof that in situations which today would seem unbearable, you lived, looked around and wrote down observations, that this right hand moved then as it does today, when we may be wiser because we are able to look back upon our former condition, and for that very reason have got to admit the courage of our earlier striving in which we persisted even in sheer ignorance.”
— Franz Kafka, The Diaries 1910-1923

6. “Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only because I’ve never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year old school girl. Oh well, it doesn’t matter. I feel like writing.”
- Anne Frank, The Diary of Young Girl

7.“I was still keenly aware as in my childhood of the inexplicable nature of my presence here on earth; where had I come from here; where was I going? I often thought about these things with a kind of stupefied horror and used to fill my diary with long self-communings”
― Simone de Beauvoir, Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter

8.“The diary will really try and tell people who you are and what you were. The alternative is writing nothing, or creating a totally lifeless, as it is leafless, garden."

- John Robert Fowles

9. “I must try to set aside half an hour in some part of my day, and consecrate it to diary writing. Give it a name and a place, and then perhaps, such is the human mind, I shall come to think it a duty, and disregard other duties for it.”
- Virginia Woolf

10. “I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.”
- Oscar Wilde
