The further you read, nonetheless, the deeper it gets but an understanding of much that escapes most will be gained from its study. Incidentally I think it would be better to use conventional e mail for lighthearted banter, this is not a chat room and we have been using it as such of late. Lets keep this site for book references. My e mail address is h.sivertsen@btinternet.com Have you read anything by Richard Dawkins? He is the chap who wrote the now well known 'Selfish Gene'among a number of other works. In that particular book he developed the concept of 'memes'. Meme [derived, if I remember correctly from a Greek word 'mimema' [from which we also get 'mime'] meaning something that is imitated. I utilised this concept in an essay about empathy when doing BA studies into religious philosophy just over 12 years ago [they encouraged mature students but I beat them, I was an antique student] then low and behold Susan Blackmore published a book the year after I graduated. This is a work called The Meme Machine and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It shows just why we follow trends and fashions be it a popular singer, a tune, a style of dress or even religion. In Dawkins words, ideas 'parasitize the mind' they take over one's thinking. This is such an important concept in human behaviour that it should be taught in all schools. We should learn to examine our own motives to understand whether they are our own ideas or or something that we have absorbed from elsewhere such as the media. Regarding the media, one first class work that was first published in 1988 is Power without responsibility by James Curran and Jean Seaton. I have the 1991 edition. It is basically about the British media but applies to media across the globe. Another excellent work along these lines is a series of essays by various contributors edited by James Curran and Michael Gurevitch titled Mass Media and Society. My edition is that published in 2000. Of course with the rapid spread of the web etc things have altered somewhat since these books but the same principles apply...even more today than then...manipulation. A study of the meme concept certainly makes one more aware of the likelihood of one's being manipulated by the mass media and therefore such an understanding is becoming increasingly relevant to modern living. Think of your own words..we learn what is beautiful through the media, newspapers, and magazines. I really do not think we do much of the thinking they do it for us. Tell us what to wear, what to eat, how to wear our hair and we stay okay with this... But we should NOT be ok with this, this allowing oneself to be manipulated, kidding ourselves that we make our own decisions when in fact we are governed by fashion in one form or another. Even Richard Dawkins is guilty of the same thing as I point out in a piece I have written for marketing purposes and which will be appearing on another site before long. We need to be ourselves and be aware of what makes us tick and why. All the best H (more)

By: Robert Pattinson check it out, It is my favorite, he seems to sing from his soul and plays the guitar so well. Also, I like his song, " To Roam." That is a real good one too. (more)

Well, I would have to say that that is a question I can not answer. If I had to say something I would say that every person is different, we learn what is beautiful through the media, newspapers, and magazines. I really do not think we do much of the thinking they do it for us. Tell us what to wear, what to eat, how to wear our hair and we stay okay with this. I do not watch much television and do not allow my girls to because if there not that perfect girl that is on the tube and they crush her They do not have to fix it or deal with it or buy it for that matter. I think something is beautiful if it stops and makes me think, I do not have to see the wind and still find the beauty in it...I do not know if this is making any sence but I tried, your so deep, it is hard to keep up. Your friend, Shea (more)

What a world we have come to that if you weigh over 115 pounds your concidered "Plus Size" and if you weigh 90 ponds your just right? Discusting if I do say so myself. (more)
