I’m studying English and History at Southampton University, and currently in my second year of study. My favourite genre of literature is not very well represented at degree level study – fantasy! So I am particularly liable to binge on 900 page books with swords and magic that I find much easier to get through than what’s on our reading lists. I enjoy historical fiction up to a point (basically, when authors start using creative license as an excuse to completely distort or ignore well-known facts, I put the book down). I’m a much keener reader of historical non-fiction. And I like to keep up with the latest atheist literature.
I also study Japanese, and although my skills are still basic (comics are all I can manage reading-wise) my interest is usually piqued by books that reference Japanese culture heavily. Of the few translated Japanese authors available, I’m especially fond of Haruki Murakami and Shuusaku Endo.
