In a slightly different way, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin succeeds brilliantly in putting across a heartfelt plea to end slavery without preaching. Don't yet know whether i'll be working that Sat when you are signing at King's Cross, but will let you know. (more)

Yes, deep down Paula cared more than she showed. Or could it be case of Daniel, being the self-centred, insecure individual he is/was, failed to notice? A combination of both I say, but I love letting the reader make up thier own mind. It's also another theme in the book to show the ripple effect of our actions. The way we are judged, go about challenging those judgements, etc. Also perhaps an insight into why certain types of people are unfaithful, and how no matter how casual they appear, it does leave some sort of scar. Also what it takes to make those engaging in unfaithful acts realise the extent of thier actions. Thankyou so much for all your compliments, and the brilliant review you gave the book. It really does mean a lot to me. I'm doing a signing at Housman's bookshop in Kings Cross, on Saturday 5th October, at 5pm. It would be great if you could make it. No problem if you can't, we've got completely novel! (more)

She is unsentimentally-described, and her heartbreak at losing the baby are beutifully-understated. her quiet resignation also shows her to be rather a fine person who has loved and lost. (more)

I'm g...Hi Fiona, no problem about the typo. I'm guilty of many myself! I see, 3 children, not 9! I'm glad that you could connect with Daniel's mothers' name. And I'm even more glad that you enjoyed the story. Who knows, there could be more tales featuring George, etc. You are not the first to tell me that you finished reading the book quickly. Some people have told me that they finished reading it in a day! This is very exciting to me. In a way, the fluidity was an effect I wanted. The main protagonist Daniel, recalls events and can't stop jotting them down. So it makes me very happy to hear that this has transferred to the speed with which some people have read the story. I definately feel that complex characters are the most interesting characters. From my experiments with writing, when I do so through a characters' mind, it's always complex! I've heard different opinions on Safra. All opinions interest me! It seems you got the Eastern European reference(!). I started writing the book when I was 19 so your neice might not be too youg for Black Shoes. Of course you know her, but I would say, never underestimate a teenagers capacity to understand, and don't be surprised if what some may find explicit in Black Shoes, is rather tame for a teenager! Great to hear from you Fiona. Thankyou for your support. (more)

I hit 9 instead of opening brackets. Sotty. I've got three children, plus nieces and nephews. i was delighted that your mum in Black Shoes is named Fiona. I so love being a mum and auntie that somehow it was good to know that you connect the name Fiona with the vocation to be a mum. The trip to Hastings is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 30 minutes, but of course you are welcome any time. Well, Black Shoes arrived early this morning, and now i am even more behind than usual with everything because I just thought i'd read the first few pages...and instead I spent the whole morning reading it. Could not put it down. There is not one boring sentence.now i would like to read the sequel. Geroge is to be the godfather...does this mean the baby will be baptized? I got so fond of the couple that I hope so. The language is spot on. Just once you said 'Sat' where I think the narrator Dan would say 'Sitting'. And I liked Daniel and while I felt he would say f-ck quite a lot, I didn't think he would take Christ's name in vain. Wow, what a morality tale, told without being a bit moralistic. and the characters are effortlessly portrayed as complex beings. Safra doesn't come over as too perfect - there's a little bit of desire to control her man in her. I was amused by the reference to a possible East European accent - was this meant to be a hint at prejudice against Poles, Hungarians, people who have very different mother tongues from each other? The whole prejudice thing made me think. maybe I'll write more about this to you when it's had time to settle. now I'm trying to decide whether to give the novel to my beloved niece. She is 17, possibly too young, though she is a very wise girl. (more)
