About me

I started writing while teaching, just as the first PC’s came on the market, and eventually had enough courage to give up the day job – hundreds of ‘magazine’ short stories, serials and travel-related and general interest features published, and also a novel (‘Tiger Country’) and a book for beginner writers, ‘How to Turn Your Holidays into Popular Fiction’). I’ve got 2 more pet novel projects on the go, but there’s no real interest out there. Both are ‘popular’ rather than literary.
I believe many readers (especially a large swathe of the huge women’s market) are not being catered for by mainstream publishers who seem to think what is needed is more sex and violence. My fiction niche is ‘romance with an edge of exotic adventure’ involving ordinary people in challenging circumstances, in believable relationships rather than unrealistic ones. Call me old-fashioned. I probably am.

But meanwhile, have been re-reading Tiger Country, which will take a bit of updating anyway to include texting, internet cafes and all that, as well as more sex 'n' violence most of which I shall have to do from memory . . . Sequel - had already thought about that, which is why I bumped off hubby Nevil to give Fran a bit more scope for more of similar. Rather than Tiger City, was thinking 'Lion Country' set in Africa, which I can do, no probs. Or any other animal . . . (more)

Thanks for getting back to me. Until I hear from WHS nothing is certain. If it comes off I will explain to you how it is going to work with them. As far as you are concerned I would be interested in reissuing an updated TIGER COUNTRY. What I have in mind is that you would make it more 'edgy' in the idiom of the day, spice up the sex, add a few touches of violence, and turn your heroine, Fran, into a series character, with at least one follow up (TIGER CITY?). I have some more ideas but would like to have your reaction to my initial thoughts. If nothing comes of the WHS project you can put it back on the shelf. Best Stuart P.S. When you respond could I ask you to send direct to my email address, as a conventional email, rather than through completely novel. Thanks. (more)

Short answer would be yes, but it would very much depend on the kind of material you are looking for. I've got a couple of unfinished novels to hand - unfinished, not because I can't pull them off, but because I'm not so desperate to publish now that I'll put in all that effort for uncertain rewards. August meet up - by all means, I'll be around, and good luck with WHS - as ever a tough nut to crack. (See Amazon uk under my name for latest - 'Travelling Light - short stories and travel writing to take you away from it all'. Cheers, Kate (more)

Sorry we didn't succeed with it, but then we didn't succeed with much else either as I ran out of money before we achieved bestsellerdom. Reason for writing is that I was a sincere admirer of your book and your ability. I am currently in Canada, and am negotiating with W H Smith to sell them a novel entitled ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER JACKAL (remember DAY OF THE JACKAL?). If this goes well we are going to need more writers and I wonder if, despite the previous negative experience, you would be interested in writing another novel. Don't do anything yet, apart from tell me yay or nay, because I won't have the final go ahead from WHS until sometime next week. It would be good to hear from you anyway. I will be in the UK late August and, if anything is doing, we could meet up. Best wishes Stuart Kay ex Aspire Publishing (more)

At the mo I'm proof reading my new book ''Travelling Light' a selection of travel-themed short stories and travel features, so rather pushed for time, but will look at yours and add reviews here and Amazon, possibly over the weekend - and that's a promise, if you'd like to do the same for 'The Wine is Red' on here, and then Amazon. We travelling types should stick together. (more)

Have you thought about getting it onto Amazon Kindle, so that people can read a sample of it on their own PC (once they've got the app. sorted out?) I'd be happy to review yours if you'd like to do the same for 'The Wine is Red' on Com Nov - search under Kate Nivison rather than the title. If you look on Amazon.co.uk, again under Author not Title, you'll see my 'How to Turn your Holidays into Popular Fiction' (for beginners) is available for practically nothing. Might it be useful to you? Seems we have the same interests. Cheers, Kate (more)
