About me

I am an American writer living in Swansea. I’ve just finished my Masters degree in Creative and Media writing at Swansea University, and I’m a journalist writing for various magazines, including BBC History, Nocturnal, Feedback, Plugged In, and my own independent magazine, The Antagonist. I’m currently involved in adapting my first novella, Danny’s Daughter, into a full-length novel for publication.

I have just popped over to The Antagonist and intend to have a good look at the magazine :-) Apologies for the late response to your message - I have rather temperamental Internet access at home! Best of luck with all your future writing projects. Liz (more) and bagged+3

Getting into journalism takes patience and persistence as much as anything. I did some training and work experience to try to get into commercial journalism, and although I've had success getting into publications, most of them still don't pay! Journalism is a very unstable market at the moment -- no one's hiring, there are few staff writers, most people are turning to freelance journalists and many of them are unpaid! If you want to get into it, do some voluntary writing for smaller publications to build up a portfolio, write letters into newspapers and magazines, and pitch ideas to editors left and right. It can take ages to get any kind of response, but it's definitely worth a go. A less orthodox but possibly more rewarding route would be to blog your heart out and to produce your own content for your own publications. The most success I've had in the field has been through my own magazine, which makes no money but gives me all the creative freedom I could ever hope for. Starting a magazine isn't difficult -- it's the making it pay part that's hard! Anyway, if writing is what you want to do, there are a million and one ways to do it, you just need to be creative! If you want to give journalism an extremely low-pressure go, I'm always looking for contributors to The Antagonist. You can visit the website or get copies here: http://www.antagonistinternational.com. Sorry again for the late reply -- I hope this has been any help at all and I wish you all the best luck in the future! Jess x (more) and bagged+3

New Year being a time for resolutions, I thought I'd try and write more and see if, at some stage, I can get anything published. I'd be really interested to read any tips you might have about getting into journalism (I keep hoping the Vogue editorship will fall into my lap - but that's just a pipe dream!).
