About me

“bibliobibuli” – There are people who read too much, bibliobibuli. I know some who are constantly drunk on books, as other men are drunk on whiskey or religion. They wander through this most diverting and stimulating of worlds in a haze, seeing nothing and hearing nothing. (H.L. Mencken’s “Notebook 71,” 1956)

A word after a word after a word is power. (Margaret Atwood)

Book lovers are engaged with writers in a private communion that occurs in some vaporous cenacle of the mind. (Joe Queenan)

Who what am I? My answer: I am the sum total of everything that went before me, of all I have been seen done, of everything done-to-me. I am everyone everything whose being-in-the-world affected was affected by mine. I am anything that happens after I’ve gone which would not have happened if I had not come. Nor am I particularly exceptional in this matter; each ‘I’, every one of the now-six-hundred-million-plus of us, contains a similar multitude. I repeat for the last time: to understand me, you’ll have to swallow a world. (Midnight’s Children, Salman Rushdie)

I love literature and I love discussing everything to do with literature, so drop me a line :)

I had mixed feelings about it, really. The first three books were compulsive and I'd never read anything like them in fantasy. But the fourth - and by that I mean Feast for Crows- was disappointing. He'd constrained by his chapter styles and that has meant the need to throw in more and more characters. You get the sense it's running away with him in places-like Jordan's Wheel of Time. So what probably could have been a well paced quartet is now stretched to seven books, the latest (Dance of..) having taken an age to write. Having said that I did enjoy it, mainly as it had my favourite characters in and his prose is still excellent (although getting a touch potty mouthed!). Look forward to your thoughts on it. If you like fantasy then I'd recommend Scott Lynch if you haven't read already. Just superb. Regards, Ross (more)

I must admit, I'm only 100 pages or so into it thus far (which is hardly anything for his books!) so am still at the point of jumping around bit by bit so far. It's my goal to finish over Christmas, so will let you know what I think. How would you say it compared to the other books so far? (more)
