I have worked as a midwife and this story brought back many memories for me.
It's a true account of birth and babies in the East End of London in the 1950s. This was a point where there was still very little ante or post-natal care and a place where poverty was common. Midwives supervised home births by arriving on bikes. I loved the style of this book, which is chatty and informal, but there is also a great narrative which drives the story along as if it were a piece of fiction.
