About me

Studying English at Newnham College, Cambridge, then Victorian Studies at Birkbeck, London, I filled several bookshelves with weird and wonderful works. I wouldn’t wish to be parted from any of them (most would probably be of little use to anyone else, in any case, as I have a habit of scribbling my thoughts across the pages as I read!).

In my spare time I enjoy browsing in second-hand bookshops. My favourite discovery to date is an uncorrected proof of Donna Tartt’s fantastic novel The Little Friend. Thank you, Oxfam!

A keen writer, I particularly like producing articles about developments in the literary world. Work experience with CompletelyNovel provided me with the opportunity to hone my writing skills, and I very much enjoy contributing to this great website. By reinvigorating my appreciation of contemporary writing, the site

I went with my Grandma, and we drove along some of the moorland roads - breathtaking scenery. Had expected the Brontes' house to be out in the wilds somewhere, but it's not as isolated as all that. Definitely worth a visit when you're back in the UK. Will look forward to a Bronte novel after Lights Out :) Apparently, Charlotte was captivated by London (or at least the idea of London - I don't know whether her thoughts changed after she'd visited the city), so a Bronte novel would follow on from Sinclair nicely! As for the Brontes, we can tackle them whenever (starting with whichever first) - have you been to their home? Despite having friends who lived near it in previous years, I never made it there, which is a bit of a shame - guess that'll be something to see when I move back to England, lol... (more)

To return to the subject of London writing, I wondered if you'd heard of Robert Finn's _Underlife_? I spotted the Rapid Review of the novel earlier and have added the book to my 'to read' list. Charlotte, in particular, is a writer I've returned to at various points in my life and always found something fresh in her work. To the best of my knowledge, Anne wrote only two novels before her premature death. It's tragic how short the lives of she and her siblings were. I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that some critics believe that, had she lived longer, Anne may have produced novels of a similar calibre to Austen. Perhaps they had a similar outlook on the world, in some respects. I'd certainly recommend _Agnes Grey_ as a starting point for Anne. It's fairly short - it could probably be read in a day or two. Anne stuck it out as a governess, then drew on her experiences in this work. Having said that, it would be doing the novel a disservice to treat it simply as a loosely veiled description of her working life. It's some time now since I read it, but I can remember finding it fascinating. (more)

Have also picked up _Jane Eyre_ again, considering it in relation to the extracts from C19 reviews presented at the end of the edition I'm reading. One reviewer managed to give away the trajectory and conclusion of the plot within the first couple of paragraphs of the article! Are you a Bronte fan? I'd be very interested to hear your opinion of Charlotte and/or her sisters. They were the reason I originally became interested in the Victorians. Take care, Liz (more)
