I have five kids and have survived many a bad moment by retreating into a book.
I couldn’t recommend Denise Affonco’s To The End of Hell more highly. Denise is driven into the Cambodia jungle by the Khmer Rouge and ends up caring not only for her two children but four of her nephews and neices.
If you having a bad day what happened to Denise puts it all in perspective.
What is even more extraordinary is that Denise manages to stay sane.

Guess I am an ‘empty nester’ but hey, you never stop worrying about your children! Thanks for this recommendation – I’ll give it a go!

You know, now that you mentioned it, I’m looking back at my experiences of the past fourteen years of parenting. Children storm into your stable, adult life and shake you out, pull you up, lift you, slow you down, make a reflector out of you, the frustration, experience and joy of it turn you and your beliefs inside out then outside in. To emerge sane at the end of it, you just might have to have been insane at the beginning. It all makes sane… sorry sense now..

I couldn’t agree more. Being disorganised helps too. Then they can’t mess things up too much.
I’ve got five – how many do you have? What I have worked out is that it just gets more challenging. My eldest is doing his finals and keeps popping up on facebook discussing points he is studying. I am racing to keep up with Chinese politics this evening!

Yeah, I’ve got six because the fourth is a triplet. Education has changed since we went and I too am finding it hard to keep up, especially with my eldest’s design technology. But if there’s anything I’ve learnt from parents is that, never feed the children your dreams or the parent’ll grow up resenting everyone. When it comes to hopes and dreams, it’s every man fore himself…

Wow triplets. I have twins and that was tricky enough at the start. Now I run a publishing house called reportage press and have another family of authors who are just as demanding!
