I’m coming to this a bit late but what the hey! I see what you mean about the book having a film-like quality, and although at time the descriptions were reserved to a line or two, at others it really cut loose: e.g. when sonny is in the car with Jake for the first time and he’s thinking about the people and the city. I guess the author had to pare away a lot of the descriptive prose in order to make the story fast, but in so doing he kept the character development secondary to the plot. I really like it! You might not have known the character motivation all of the times, but they were certainly doing stuff all the time.
