Brit Writers' Awards Unpublished call for submissions

    published on 2010-08-06

A ‘heads up’ that the Brit Writers Award are now accepting submissions for BWA Unpublished 2011.
The official deadline is 5pm (UK time) on Friday 25 February 2011, but they are closing the competition once they receive 20,000 submissions.

The organisation behind the Awards is offering £10,000 to the overall winner which is not a small amount! This year was the first year that they put up the prize and it was won by a children’s book author called Catherine Cooper.

You can check it out here at www.britwriters.co.uk
You can submit up to three pieces of work for a fee of £10.95 (including VAT). But apparently entry is free of charge for entrants who have declared their association to a BWA member school, business or community organisation by using that organisation’s unique BWA membership number.

Did anyone enter the last competition – would be interested to hear your experience of it and whether you would recommend it. Also, if you have any opinions about these kinds o...

Nathan Bransford: A literary agent worth visiting

    published on 2010-06-24

    Preview

Just a quick blog post to say that writers, if you haven’t already come across Nathan Bransford you should definitely check out his blog.

Nathan wrote this article in the New York Times entitled The Rejection Letter of the Future Will Be Silence (And Why This is a Good Thing).
He makes a lot of really great points around the way that the publishing industry is changing. In his opinion, it is no bad thing that digital publishing and self-publishing means that there are lots more books available. He doesn’t like the fact that he has to ‘reject’ many manuscripts because they are not commercially viable for him to take on (and therefore trample on the dreams of many an aspiring writer). The fact is that they may have an audience out there, and now it is possible for an author to try and reach that audience themself.

Top 3 Apps that you might not know about but really should

    published on 2010-02-15

There are a few apps that the CompletelyNovel Team really couldn’t be without. They are free, easy to use and guaranteed to make your life easier. And they are not just publishing related… if you are a writer, reader or just general human, you should definitely take a look.

Dropbox – recently featured on BBC Click,, this has been a CN favourite for a long time. It’s an online folder that syncs with your computers and means no more emailing yourself docs, or constantly carrying a USB drive.

LastPass – how many websites are you a member of now? How do you remember all your passwords (or not as the case may be)? Now you only need to remember one!

Word Reference – described by Vince at CompletelyNovel as “The most amazing website if you want to translate anything.” A very handy tool for those switching between English and European languages and wanting to get the translat...

    Website upgrades and jacket potatoes

Another week gone! Here’s a little round up of what the CN team has been up to.

As some of you may know, but others may be completely unaware, there are some fairly large changes coming to CompletelyNovel. We’ve been doing lots of assessment over the past months (and year in fact, since we launched CompletelyNovel to the public)in terms of how people use the site, what we can do to make the publishing process as easy as possible, and how we can help everyone get the most out of the community. We’ve also had lots of feedback from users on the site which has been very helpful in reminding us what the piorities are.

We’ll be giving you more details on the changes as a whole soon, but here are details on what we’ve been working on today, some exciting potato-related news and also a reminder of books published on CompletelyNovel recently that you should check out!

Just thought I would pen a few lines about the Society of Young Publishers Conference that is happening this coming weekend in Oxford.

It’s taking place at Oxford Brookes University on Saturday 14th November 2009.

I’m going to speaking at the seminar on Entrepreneurial Publishing along with Davy Nougarede, the Director of Heavy Entertainment Ltd and Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year 2009. Should be fun…hopefully I will see some of you there.
