Stephen King's 'The Stand' is parts Tolkien quest, Kerouac road-novel, and horror classic throughout its thousand pages. The post-apocalyptic schism of U.S. society is masterfully presented, with a superflu wiping out many of the population. Two groups emerge, and one is led by a mysterious, dangerous man who may be supernatural in origin.

    Stephen King's On Writing

This was the book that re-ignited my passion for writing. On Writing is part auto-biography, part guide to writing. An easy, but fulfilling read.

    Short yet chilling

Stephen King's short(ish) story 'The Mist' brings large-scale horror to a small mountain town with aplomb. Extra-dimensional beasties wreak havoc with small-town folk, but are upstaged by the true evil of the people faced with the end of their lives as they know it. Everything about this story is impressive - how short it is yet how much it packs in, and how graphic it is despite its insane narrative ploys.

    What drives people...?

One of King's finer achievements; he delves right into what people really would do if they have that which they most desired.

This is a early work of Mr King's and still a tough one to beat, an epic tale that pulls you in and I warn you, you could lose at least a week of your life, it's worth it.

    Scary and full of Suspense!

This book is pure King right down to the raw bone. It took me a few days to read this one as it is over 1000 pages long but it was well worth it. A great horror story about seven friends who have to deal with a demon horror they thought they had destroyed when they were children previously in the small town of Derry in Maine. They have to encounter it all again as adults. It has everything from gore and horrible deaths right through to teenage sex. However through all this King has produced a book that totally sucks you in and allows you to really feel what the characters are going through. My only gripe was that there were areas where the descriptions of surroundings were over the top and I felt that it interrupted the action somewhat in places (like a news flash popping up on the TV when you are right in the middle of a really good episode of your favourite programme). That said if you are a fan of Horror books this one should be right up your street.

not one to read if your just dipping in and out of.

It's a shame about this book because i was really looking forward to getting myself into something scary! I found the changing of different characters and times too choppy to follow for just dipping into in my break times. I think its a definite sit down and spend a lot of time reading to get fully submerged into it.

Possibly one of the best books I've read, slow at the start but it draws you in.

Having read all of Mr King's work this is without a doubt the best book he's written in the last 10 years. If you only read one of his books you won't go far wrong with this one. Enjoy Mr King at his best.
