When Being Published Is Not Enough: Advice from Caroline Smailes by Caroline Smailes

    published on 2010-07-19

Like Bees To Honey is my third novel with HarperCollins imprint The Friday Project. That’s three novels with a real life, flesh and blood publisher. Yet, even with three books listed on Amazon and sitting on bookshelves; I still feel this is not enough. I am not saying that I am ungrateful. In fact, not a day goes by when I am not amazed at my good fortune at being published. What I mean is that ‘just’ having a publisher or ‘just’ having a book published is no longer enough to build a writing career. In bygone years, I am sure writers could secure a book deal and then sit back and wait for fame and fortune to come their way. But those days are long gone and I have quickly discovered that building an audience and attracting potential readers is a joint effort between the publisher and the writer.

“There’s a guy at work with a mug that says ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’. I’m trying to wean myself off coffee-cup life-management, but I like that one. I think it’s particularly pertinent to fiction writing.” Adam Marek, prize-winning short story writer and novelist pits meticulous planning against improvisation when it comes to the writing process. He’s learned the hard way…so you don’t have to!

The Rise of the Author Entrepreneur by Anna Lewis

    published on 2010-06-30

A number of CompletelyNovel writers featured in my recent article for Publishing Industry newsblog ‘Publishing Perspectives’. It’s called The Rise of the Author-Entrepreneur The article is all about ways that authors (and in particular, the self-publishing authors on CompletelyNovel) are becoming more entrepreneurial in terms of the way they go about marketing, selling and building an audience for their book. This is great news for the publishing industry as it helps ensure that books get seen and heard amongst all the other noise that is going on out there, and that there is increasing innovation in the publishing industry.
