'89: The Unfinished Revolution - A book to mark 20 years since the Berlin Wall Came Down by Anna Lewis

    published on 2009-11-09

It was one of the most iconic moments of 20th Century history: the day of the fall of the Iron Curtain. It’s one of those events with such vivid imagery that many of us will remember exactly where we were when we heard about it. But the fall of the wall is not the end of the story, as BBC’s journalist Nick Thorpe writes in his recent book published by Reportage Press. Having witnessed many of the most turbulent events in Eastern Europe, for Thorpe, the revolutions of 1989 are not yet at an end. He sees the previous cold war as having been replaced by a new cold war between the people and the state. We have five copies of Nick Thorpe’s incredibly insightful book ’89:The Unfinished Revolution: Power and Powerlessness in Estern Europe up for grabs. Head over to the 1989 competition page and let us know what you remember of the day the wall came down for a chance to win one.

Script evaluation services - are they worth it? by Alan Baker

    published on 2009-10-14

Alan Baker, one of our favourite CompletelyNovel writers, tells of his experience using a manuscript evaluation service. If you’re sitting back, feeling pleased to have finally finished your novel…you might want to consider, as Alan did, getting an outsider to take a look at it. For Alan, it was a great way to get an idea of what an agent or editor was likely to think of his novel The Lighthouse Keeper.

Check out our slot on the Guardian Tech Weekly podcast. I was asked by Jemima Kiss from the Guardian’s Tech team to answer some questions about CompletelyNovel a couple of months ago. It’s done in an Elevator Pitch style, complete with lift noises and everything! Was a really fun experience (especially seeing inside the new Guardian sound booths at King’s Place in King’s Cross) and although I can’t help cringing at the sound of my own voice, I recommend that you have a listen…you can also find out lots of interesting stuff about Guitar Hero and Fifa 10! Congratulations to CompletelyNovel author Fiona Skovronsky who has had another very successful book signing, this time in her local Waterstone. Selling over 20 copies of The Smuggler’s Caves on 26 September, and garnering lots of interest from local press, readers and fans of the Smugglers Caves in Hastings, Fiona is doing a great job of promoting and selling her novel! You can find out more about Fiona’s experience of publishing her book in our article Bringing History to Life. Well done Fiona!
