I think there are two very interesting points here. One is that marketing is key. To make a success of your book people need to know about it. You have to use your networks whether they be at work, a tennis club, your blog or posts at your local village shop. If people don’t know about it you can’t sell it.
The next interesting point is about ‘testing the water’. This to me just makes sense. A publishing company is a business out to make money. Going for an untested, unsold book means higher financial risk than a book with a few hundred sales, great reviews and a loyal fan base. We would gasp in shock if a record label signed a band that hadn’t sold anything, hadn’t been on tour and didn’t have fans. The record labels wait until most of the work is done for them and then provide the facilities to take everything to the next level. What do you think?
The main problem in Self-publishing is Sales Promotion and Distribution of the self-published books. A well distribution system can offer the readers to taste the water in self-published books. Pritis Majumdar, author of WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN from completelynovel.com

Self-publishing is just taking a chance, who knows you might luck up and sell thousands of books for the 1st time and be an unknown author, it is just all in what the
reader wants. It is different strokes for different folks. . To each individual, everyone has his or her own desires and it is something they are looking for within a book and if whatever the publisher has written gets the attention there it is.
So no one ever really knows but I do agree the well-known author has a better chance of selling their books because the readers already know their works and what type of
books they are publishing and they like reading them. So good luck to every first time publisher, you just got to publish and see what happens, that includes myself. You will be nervous at first, this is only natural but don’t give up, if the 1st book don’t sell do not get discouraged just keep writing until you publish one that does. Who knows you might just end up being on New York Times Best Seller List. Good Luck Everyone,
I wish you All the best in your publishing and much success.
